Dave McGovern

Dave McGovern
Trombone

Trombonist Dave McGovern was born in the heart of New Orleans, and is the 4th in a line of 5 trombone playing McGovern’s. His father and two older brothers played and now his daughter is in her 2nd year of learning to play. Dave’s baby bottle probably had a mouthpiece on it as he has played since early childhood. He was a featured soloist at a 5th grade concert, and practically every concert since. At the age of 11 after warming up his oldest brothers horn for a Christmas concert. The high school band director asked him to learn a Piece called “Holiday for
Trombones” which featured Dave and his two older brothers as a trombone trio. It was performed at the High School Spring concert. Dave attended Southeastern Louisiana University where he played a little bass trombone and several years of lead trombone and was featured many times. He has performed with such national acts as Percy Sledge, The Coasters, The Platters, and The Marvellettes. He has also shared the stage with such names as Irma Thomas, and the Classic Rock Allstars featuring Guitarist Mike Pinera , keyboardist Jerry Corbetta, drummer Peter Rivera, and Bassist Dennis Noda. He has played with local bands La Overdrive, and Heartbeat.

Dave likes to say he has a playing style all his own. He has a smooth natural trombone sound until asked to ad-lib a solo then the animal in him takes over and anything could happen then. Dave has played with Stormy off and on for over a year now as a sub for Ernie, and things are really beginning to gel. He has filled Ernie’s shoes quite well and we are glad to have him as a regular member of Stormy.
